Two similar Jeep Compass build sheets use different codes for what appears to be the same feature. Mine uses *RL, described as “Leather Structural Bucket seats. This code identifies the factory seat style, upholstery, or interior trim configuration” Can anyone explain how these variations are normally handled?

This sounds more like a documentation mismatch than a decoder error. Different databases often shorten the same factory description in different ways.

My experience has been positive, but the benefit depends on how the vehicle is used. I would treat *RL as confirmation of the configuration, then evaluate whether that equipment matters for your driving.

If the feature is listed but not working, scan all related modules before assuming it was removed. A stored fault, replacement module, or configuration mismatch can make original equipment appear absent.

Some codes are reused across several brands, but that does not always mean the parts are identical. Model, trim, drivetrain, and production date can all matter.
