Dodge Engine Code by VIN

The eighth character of a Dodge VIN identifies the engine, and on this brand that single character can represent a difference of tens of thousands of dollars.

Few lineups span a wider range under similar sheet metal. A Charger can carry a V6 or a supercharged V8; a Durango can be a family hauler or a muscle SUV. The engine character is where the truth starts.

The familiar modern families are easy to keep straight: the 3.6L Pentastar V6 workhorse, the 5.7L HEMI V8, the 6.4L 392 HEMI, and the supercharged 6.2L found in Hellcat models.

The VIN character gives you the family the car was born with. The factory build record goes further, listing the engine's sales code along with the supporting equipment that came with it, such as cooling and exhaust hardware.

To see both, enter the 17-character VIN in the lookup on our home page. The site retrieves the factory build sheet and equipment listing for that exact vehicle.

Use the decode to test listings before you drive anywhere. An ad titled R/T sitting on a VIN that decodes to a V6 is not a bargain, it is a badge job.

Engine swaps deserve special attention. The VIN always reports the born-with engine, so a swapped car shows a mismatch between record and reality.

A swap is not automatically a dealbreaker, but it must be priced, insured, and inspected as a modified car, not as a factory example.

The engine data also matters for routine ownership. Filters, plugs, mounts, cooling parts, and belts differ by engine, and quoting the code ends parts-counter guesswork.

Maintenance schedules and fluid specifications track the engine too, including cars whose V8s pair with cylinder-deactivation systems that are particular about oil spec.

For buyers of performance models, confirm the whole drivetrain, not just the engine. The Dodge Transmission Code by VIN and Sales Codes guide covers the other half of that verification.

Insurance and resale both lean on this data as well. Documented original drivetrains support value; assumed ones do not.

If you want to understand where the engine character sits among the other sixteen, our How to Read a Dodge VIN Number guide maps every position.

Check the eighth character first, then confirm it against the build sheet. Two minutes of reading beats discovering the truth at the dyno or the DMV.
